I haven't tried much here because couldn't get past the carnitas! They are the best in town! I live in Johnson county and will drive out here for CARNITAS! It's just that good. They make home made flour tortillas too!

I like this place. It's a simple place. You go in, pick what you'd like then few minutes later you are presented with delicious taco or whatever you ordered. Then you add the sauce of your choices to it, onion, cilantro. I have no clue which sauce is what but they made my mouth on fire. It's so good! I also got some of their tortilla today, it's delicious as well. The price is also very reasonable. I know I'll have to make many return trips in the future!

Perfect family lunch! Great relleno burritos and their "Tacos el pastor" are the most amazing Tacos of any kind of meat I have ever had (be sure to grab their amazing spicy sauce, orange in color, and glob it all over the tacos). By the way, this place is amazingly authentic to me. I am from New Mexico so I have a pretty good taste for authentic Mexican perfection... I can tell you that this is the best tortilleria in town! The atmosphere is great too, I first walked in seeing busy workers cooking and preparing the food. Don't forget to buy some of their fresh tortillas as well! (BEST EVER). This is probably the best and most authentic Mexican restaurant I have and will probably ever be going to for the Gloria processing future of perfectly cooked Mexican culture!

This place is rocks. Street tacos are authentic, simple, meat, lime and cilantro and sauces to boot. Totally the real deal. A must, yes do it.

As someone who has traveled extensively across mexico, I give this place a thumbs up. Something to note is that fact that this place is a Carniceria, Tortilleria, and additionally a Taqueria. This means that all of the ingredients of your taco will be prepared entirely fresh as the meat comes from the in house butcher and the shells are made from scratch. That said, of all of the taco shops in KC, these guys have by far the best Shells. As for meats, their Barbacoa is unreal, however it is not available every day. Their Pastor is second to "El Camino Real" (no one beats them in Pastor). The steak is great as well. They have a prepare it yourself type bar which has 3 salsas (ranging from super hot - ultra hot), onions, cilantro, and limes. Theres is no waitress, as your food will come almost immediately, and you seat yourself. I would recommend 2 barbacoa and 2 pastors and you should be set.

Make an afternoon of it. Pick up chicken across the street at El Pollo Rey and a relleno burrito and a bottle of Mexican coke at this place. Don't forgot extra flour tortillas to last the week and a dozen red pork tamales. I think I am going to cry... Authentic, incredibly tasty food. I have instructed my wife that when I die (probably soon because of the relleno burritos) she is to have me cremated and then sprinkle my ashes around this place.

The only reason I hesitate to give 5 stars is because I want to keep this place to myself! I don't want it to be overtaken by hipster wannabe foodie types. I want to it to remain non pretentious and just keep making authentic food. If you want tex mex you are in the wrong place. There is no cheese on the tacos here and the tortillas are corn! The tacos pastor are the best choice. Top them with fresh cilantro, lime, red onions, and the avocado sauce and u are set. Keep the line moving, people! Have your mind made up before you get to the register and please refrain from mouth breathing all over my food at the food counter; It's ok to step to the side and wait.

This place will surprise you when you first enter it is a market that serves Authentic food! If you don't know what something is ASK!!! If you are wanting taco bell beware this is REAL Mexican food! The Carne Asade taco's were amazing I felt like I was young again in my friends grandma's kitchen with all the real fix ins and all I even grabbed a fresh Avocado and they cut it for me to eat with my food! The pastries are a must too...delish! This is definitely outta the box but don't be afraid try this place you will NOT be disappointed if you have ever had real Mexican food.

I had heard about this place and thought I would give it a try. It is set up as a butcher shop, restaurant, grocery store. The Staff - They are very nice and welcome you in. I ordered and was walking around looking and had 3 different workers ask if I needed any help. The Food - I ordered 4 beef tacos for $5 and a burrito. First of all the taco is on the greatest tortilla I have ever had, next the taco comes with just meat no cheese or anything. You can then put on cilantro, lime, onions and salsa. The meat is fantastic and its hard not to eat just four. The burrito was also very good and was only $3. The only problem I have with this place is I would love to see some cheese on the taco's and the salsa was hot, hotter and you got to be kidding me hot so they need some mild salsa. This is a great place and everyone should try it.

No this is not Chipolte or god forbid Taco Bell. This I guess would be like the CBGB's of taco places. This is for die hard street taco lovers. Being that this place also serves as a butcher shop the meat is phenomenal and 50% of the taco battle. Now the other 50% the tortilla is also won because this place make their own tortillas as well. They're usually turning them out fresh inside so if you want to blow your mind get a batch of flour tortillas and try not to eat them all on your way home.

Wonderful! Tortilla's can't be beat, and I had lunch from there today, the pork and steak taco's were wonderful and the tamale was wonderful, the first one I've ever eaten plain with nothing on it! My co-worker got cookies that were equally great. Off the beaten path but worth the trip.

Just started working down the street from this place. My boss introduced me to their tacos al pastor, and I am HOOKED. Best tacos I ever had, and the sauces are amazing. They have an avocado creamy salsa that is killer. The store isn't much to look at, but please do youself a favor and put tacos al pastor from San Antonio Tortilleria on your bucket list...

When I have to do any work at all, anywhere near lunchtime, in downtown KCK, my first thought is whether I'll have time for tacos. And when I think tacos, I think San Antonio. I lived in Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Tijuana. I work in immigration law. So trust and believe, I'm a bit of a taco snob. And there are many fine, fine taquerias in KCK, but I take San Antonio any day. The tortillas are great, the meats are great, but hands down, they have the best salsas in the city. And the cuates don't judge when you put a mountain of cilantro on your tacos al pastor. Instead, they give you a knowing look of approval because there is just literally no such thing as too much cilantro. Fact. The place makes me pine for chilangolandia so badly, but it makes me feel back at home with the walk up counter, the kickass salsas, the carniceria counter with fried turkey tails, lengua, anything your heart could desire. And up front, pan dulce, gansitos, and the faint smell of Suavitel that takes me back to Mexico lindo. The only thing that could make this place better is if (a) it served beer and (b) had a satellite location closer to my house or at least a truck that would follow me every day.

Okay, so I love super authentic and local tacos. This place is wacky and wonderful. They make tortillas on premesis, both flour and corn. I dare you to try not to eat the flour ones in the car. They recently added a small pastry case. In the back is a full blown butcher shop, with some tasty already cooked delights too. And in the middle of this 3 ring circus of the mouth is a taco stand. Here's the thing, you can get awesome tacos in alot of places in KCK, but the magic of this place is that you can put as MUCH toppings on them as you like. They have containers of chopped onion, cilantro, lime, and 3 different sauces. Note: the creamy green one is the hottest. This is important for me as I love to pile on the toppings. On weekends they to a special meat that is like super awesome pot roast. This place is really fantastic and delicious, and a fun visit, and everyone eating there is brown, ALWAYS a good sign.

Absolutely amazing and very authentic little market in KCK! Fresh meat (carniceria) and fresh tortillas (tortilleria)! Tacos, burritos, and tortas. All the salsas are spicy and delicious. Order at the counter, grab a seat, and wait for your food to come up in the window. Two of us ate for $10. I highly recommend!

High quality street tacos. Good all around and there's a nice selection of items. The asada (beef) is the best I've had in comparison to the other taco joints in KCK. Exceptionally moist, and flavorful. The verde sauce is lovely. The pastor is very good, but not quite El Camino Real. Tip - Hitting it at the peak of the lunch rush will cause you to wait in line, but this keeps the guy behind the grill constantly turning out fresh, moist meat for the tacos. If you go at a down time, the meat sits in piles on the side of the grill and gets a little dry.

We went here on Sunday, and as the previous poster said "This is not a Taco Bell". Its a very small, mom and pop kind of atmosphere. They serve food there, but its not a restaurant. Their tortillas are absolutely amazing. They are very clean, and even while we were there they were scrubbing the walls to keep them looking nice, sweaping and mopping, and scrubbing down their stove top grill. The only complaint I have about them is when they make your food they do not use gloves. I don't know where their hands have been! However, the food is absolutely to die for and amazingly cheap. I also purchased some Chorizo from the butcher, which I was not too impressed with. It has way too much red chili peppers in it - it has more chili peppers then meat, which is very nasty texture wise. Its not very spicy, infact its really sweet. We ended up having to 'spice it up' because it did not taste too good. However, it tasted very good with some fried potatoes. (Papas con chorizo). If you get food, the idea is you eat your food, then you pay for everything you get at once when you're done before you leave. There is one register, but its not a very busy place so don't worry about this. Also, there are toppings on their food bar. You can add these to your food at no cost. However, a warning - the sauces get hotter and are unlabeled. There is no 'mild' sauce, they are all pretty spicy. Don't try them if you don't like spice! Also, many restaurants you will be forced to buy a drink for each person. However, we purchased a 2 liter of Coke for $2 and shared it with 4 people. 50 cents a person is pretty good! I am absolutely impressed with the prices, and the atmosphere is completely different from anything you will have ever been too. Do not go into this place thinking its a restaurant, or that the American culture will have impacted this place. Its designed to be authentic mexican - its designed for selling tortillas, and on the side they have a butcher and a small food stand. They do have some places to sit, i think there were 4 tables in the middle of the building. Overall great experience. I hope you enjoy your time there.

This is not Taco Bell. If you want prefab'd tacos and sterile enviroments go elsewhere. This is the place for the person who wants good food with a side of adventure. I just got back from lunch at San Antonio's and for the millionenth time I am well pleased. The food is out of this world and as authentic since my trip to Mexico. Tacos and burritos are available in a variety of meats, but I suggest the lengua. There are sauces and limes to dress your food. The light green sauce has some bite, but I don't think it is too hot. If I had to be critical of anything, it would be the ordering/paying system. But again, if you want ease and American, go elsewhere.

June 30th, 2012. This guy sold us spoiled tamales. A package of 12 looked like it has been into by mice and made my wife sick. He refused to exchange for good ones. The place is more than likely infested by mice, the food is spoiled, and I'll never go back to this place. Sick. ;(

Yesterday we went to our favorite Mexican joint we could find in Kansas City, Mo. After eating lunch and lunch was great, we went driving around. We ended up over in Kansas City, KS. Seen we a few different Mexican restaurants and knew we would be back. So my partner had a Drs visit today and after the appointment was over we went back to Kansas City, KS to try and find a place to eat. Like I said we had our favorite one on the Missouri side, the food is really good but the service sucks. So today we ended up at Tortilleria San Antonio. Not only can you pick up a few things for dinner from the grocery store or meat market, but they make their tortillas right there behind the cash register, and have the best taco stand in the area. I believe they have the best street tacos in the Kansas City area. The service is very good, everyone was smiling and it looked like they were enjoying their job. You just step up to the taco stand and order you food then pick you sauce from the four sauces on the front of the taco stand, but I will tell you the habranero sauce is very tasty and kinda hot, well its real hot, but the flavor is out of this world. After you are done eating and ready to leave you pick up what else you need and then go pay. We will be making the twenty minute trip back over at least once a week.

Great tacos from the grill! It's not fancy, it's a meat market! Can't beat the tacos (nor the price). My husband also likes the menudo.

Best tortillas in town. Best pastor taco or burrito in town! Hopefully when you go the tortillas are coming fresh off the conveyor in the front window and the pastor is freshly sliced off the vertical spit roast cause if your lucky and hit that time it DOES NOT GET BETTER! I must say that unfortunately it cant always be that way but this place still is good! Package of 10 fresh tortillas $2.50 Tacos $1.25 and Burritos $4

The tacos-the end. Actually, the tamales are great, the salsas are spectacularly spicy and delicious and one day I'll actually do some grocery shopping there because everyone is very patient with us monolingual people. The tortillas-meh, but only because I prefer corn and they only sell flour.

For carnivores only. The full name is "Carniceria y Tortilleria San Antonio." Carniceria means "butcher shop." Indeed it includes an enormous butcher shop in the back of the room. In the restaurant area, they offer no fish tacos, no beer, and almost nothing vegetarian, not even salad. Since I am a pesco vegetarian, I would not have even tried it, if it had not been for Tiger's review. I got the chile relleno burrito for $3. It was simply terrific, but there is nothing else on the menu I can eat. The butcher shop area does sell tilapia, so the restaurant could offer fish tacos. If they did, I would raise my rating to five stars. If you like meat and don't mind having only soft drinks available, you will probably love this place. It helps to speak Spanish (I don't), but not necessary. The quality is outstanding and the prices very low.

Tacos are tasty, but are too greasy for my taste. This rating is for their tortillas. We come here whenever we need tortillas. They are great. When you purchase them they're so fresh and still warm. They don't get hard/chewy after a few minutes of prepping them like the tortillas from other places. Instead the consistency is still nice and soft... and delicious. My lady says they are just like the tortillas she would purchase in TJ and is happy to finally find a place in KC with good tortillas.

I love this place. I love the way it smells. I love the people I've talked to there. I love the tacos. And, damn it, I love the sauce! A few PSAs before I get started. If either of these announcements bother you, I would suggest you just stop reading here: 1) No, this is not a place for vegetarians 2) No, you should not try the available sauces if you don't like spicy food Okay, now that we got that out of the way and it's just us, let's continue. As another reviewer mentioned, the buche is great if you have the constitution. I also enjoy the pork, carne asada, and carnitas. But that's not the fun part. The sauces. The first two sauces to the customers right of the counter are the milder, but still pretty kicky, sauces. I'm a green sauce fan so tend to head towards that. Put a nice base down of those, then if you're serious move over to the left two sauces. I recommend the creamy-colored orange sauce, clearly habanero based. It has an amazing flavor, but will certainly knock you out of your chair if you're not an accomplished spicy food eater. I'm not really, but it's worth it to me to work through the initial bout of hick-ups, sweating, and/or running nose...because it's delicious. Go for the orange sauce. You can do it, I believe in you.

Get the pastor; stay away from the asada. Tortillas made on site. Good stuff. I wouldn't recommend sitting near the meat case while you eat. I almost lost my appetite after seeing various barnyard body parts.

Tacos al pastor are fantastic! Three sauces, hot, hotter, and fire. Also, cheap.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
